During a feijoada (traditional Brazilian lunch) at Sacopã Quilombo, in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Rio de Janeiro, several projects in the region, chosen as part of a special selection process, were introduced. The event was held on December 1st, 2012, with the support of the Ford Foundation, our partner in the special selection. Representing the Brazil Fund were the executive director, Ana Valéria Araújo, and project coordinator, Maíra Junqeira. Thirteen projects were chosen for support. Of these, eleven are related to human rights violations stemming from preparations for the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016; and two relate to the rights of quilombo residents residing in urban Rio de Janeiro.
