The Brazil Human Rights Fund, in partnership with the Ford Foundation, organized a meeting in São Paulo with representatives from thirteen of this year’s supported projects that deal with the issue of “human rights and urban development.” During February 26-28, participants shared their experiences and explored the theme, “Communications and human rights – Networking and activism in the Information Era.” The focus was on the importance of communications for political mobilization and to guarantee the visibility of defended causes.
The meeting brought together groups fighting against the adverse impacts of the 2014 World Cup in several Brazilian cities, along with organizations that defend the Right to the City, the Right to Housing and urban properties belonging to quilombo-descendant communities.
Apart from technical workshops, the beneficiaries participated in a group discussion with representatives of other organizations from civil society, discussing the rights to communication and media access, among other issues. The following organizations were present: a Pública (the Public), the National Campaign for the Right to Education, Conectas, Greenpeace, Intervozes (Intervoices), MST and Repórter Brasil (Brazil Reporter), all of whom contributed to a valuable, diverse debate on the issues.
