Hello!
As the year ends, we celebrate a significant achievement: the Brazil Human Rights Fund turns 18. This foundation was envisioned and established by activists to support the fight for human rights in our country, based on the priorities of grassroots organizations working throughout Brazil’s diverse territory. Since then, we have supported 1,860 projects and granted over 96 million reais (approximately US$ 16 million).
This significant amount of resources directly goes to the organizations, communities, and activists at the forefront of the fight for rights. It is also provided through emergency funds, providing rapid response to protect the lives, security, and territories of human rights and environmental activists who are threatened because of their work.
With these organizations and activists, we build trust-based relationships that strengthen their autonomy. We foster opportunities for meetings and collective training, understanding that the paths, solutions, and networks they build are concrete proposals for advancing rights and social guarantees.
In 2024, our team managed 18 calls for proposals and two emergency funds, supporting over 350 ongoing projects. The list of these calls is at the end of this letter, and it is worth checking to get an idea of the diversity of human rights causes that the Brazil Human Rights Fund is actively supporting.
We take part in key debates of our time, such as gender and racial equity, and the urgent promotion of climate justice. Through Labora, our fund supporting decent work, which made over 90 grants, and Raízes, our climate justice fund for Indigenous peoples and local communities, which currently supports 45 projects, we also help grassroots organizations participate and make an impact on these issues. We helped take over 20 groups and collectives to the G20 Social, in Rio de Janeiro.
We also brought these debates, alongside activists, to the New York Climate Week. We were in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, to present ideas on climate resilience and the territorial and human rights of Indigenous peoples, local communities, and workers.
On these occasions, we were joined by other independent and territorial funds that are part of Comuá Network, a Brazilian group of philanthropic organizations dedicated to strengthening grassroots organizations and communities.
In this way, we played an active role in the debates and actions to strengthen Brazilian philanthropy focused on transformation, with social and socio-environmental justice.
Before closing the year 2024, we launched three more calls for proposals: Democracy and Rights: Building the Future with Justice and Equality (Democracia e Direitos: Construindo o Futuro com Justiça e Igualdade); the Raízes Call: Local Communities, Quilombolas, and Indigenous Peoples Fighting for Climate Justice (Raízes: Comunidades Locais, Quilombolas e Povos Indígenas Lutando por Justiça Climática); and the Labora Call: Strengthening Informal Workers’ Fight for Their Rights 2025 (Labora: Fortalecendo Trabalhadores Informais na Luta por Direitos 2025).
We will be on holiday break from December 20th to January 5th. During this period, you can continue to follow our work through our channels: website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
We thank the leaders and collectives that submit projects to our calls for proposals and defend human rights in Brazil. We also thank those who follow, donate, and believe in our work, as well as our partners in philanthropy. All these supports and partnerships are crucial to fulfilling our mission and helping transform Brazilian society. Our history is built through this network. Keep going with us!
We wish you a peaceful and prosperous holiday season. Once again, thank you very much.
