Objetivos e público alvo
To continue the production and broadcasting of the radio show “Amazon Voices”, an observatory of social, cultural, economic and environmental rights of people and communities in the great basin of the Madeira River, a transboundary River, covering Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. The main objective is to denounce the violation of human rights due to the implementation of the hydroelectric complex on the Madeira River, in Rondônia, and show signs of life and resistance. The main victims of these violations are children, youth, women and the elderly, indigenous peoples and traditional communities members.
Atividades Principais
Holding a 90 minutes slot (9am to 10h30h) on Sundays, on Radio Caiari of Porto Velho, AM 1430MHz, to run the Amazon Voices show.
Strengthening Network of Institutions in Defense of Life.
Hiring a legal counsel to prepare and file a lawsuit for damages caused to flooded communities.
Promote the seminar “Major Projects, Major Impacts – where we are and where we want to be”.
Acting in the production of information materials on major projects and distributing it to communities, peoples and organizations.
Disclose the negative impacts on socio-biodiversity, on human rights and on nature on the Amazon Voices Program and on social media, in interviews held on TV shows and other media.
Contexto
The AM Radio on short, medium and tropical waves is still the main means of communication between urban centers and villages, rubber plantations, coastal communities, fishermen, maroon communities, rural settlements and peripheral urban areas. It is in the outskirts of Brazil, that large hydroelectric projects are causing destruction to the places where traditional peoples live and to their way of living, violating basic rights: the right to come and go, to food (fish), to territory, to organize and especially the right not to be violated.
Due to large projects (plans for 10 more dams in the Rivers of the Brazilian Amazon and Pan Amazonian regions, two of them on the Madeira River basin) with increased deforestation and climate change impacts, in 2014, the area suffered the biggest flooding in history, causing the dismantling of the lives of over 50,000 people in the great basin of the Madeira River. In this scenario, the Amazon Voices Program is the only means of direct communication with more than 30 000 people on Sundays. It airs on Sundays, on Radio Caiari, communicating and promoting rights and allowing for the promotion of research on violations and their impacts on the people and communities articulated by the SOS Amazon group (Brazil and Bolivia) and the Entities in Defense of Life network, proponent of the Amazon Voices.

The Madeira Vivo Institute – IMV was founded in August 2006 as a legal instrument of the Energy Debate Forum in Rondônia with the launch of the campaign “Viva o Rio Madeira Vivo”. This campaign was coordinated with the support of FBOMS Energy WG who facilitated the discussion around the licensing processes of major works and they also held educational activities with schools, youth groups, radio and television programs. In 2007, the Institute also coordinated a technical study group to analyze the EIA/RIMA and the negative impacts of the Hydroelectric Complex of Madeira, supporting social movements in public hearings on the hydroelectric plants on the Madeira River. It supported the development and implementation of the Sustainable Fisheries Project with traditional fishermen in Jaci-Parana River in 2008, they organized a “meeting without frontiers” between Brazil, Bolivia and Peru (2009). The institute coordinates the Amazon Voices program as an instrument to report rights violations in the construction sites of the plants on the Madeira River (2009-2015), as well as the Alliance of Pan Amazonian Rivers, in the Pan Amazonian Social Forum (2010-2015). Presently, they joined efforts with the Organizacion Comunal de las Mujeres Amazonicas de Beni and COSAGUA (Guayaramerin) of Brazil and Bolivia SOS Amazonian group in defense of the victims of the great flood of 2014 in the basin of Rio Madeira (2014-2016).
