Context
The central sertão (semi-arid) region of Ceará has a history of land concentration, which began to change starting with land occupations by the MST and rural trade unions, mostly since the 1990s. Since then, rural communities and settlements have struggled for access to the right to land and water. Efforts to strengthen this way of life have been threatened by the probable installation and operation of the Santa Quitéria Project, an industrial complex aiming to mine and process uranium and phosphate in Santa Quitéria. The mining experience in other territories has shown a number of social, environmental and health issues, such as changes to the traditional ways of using and occupying the land, mass migrations of workers, overloading of public services, increase in violence, drug use and trafficking, water and soil contamination, and increased cancer rates.
About the organization
The mission of the Anti-Nuclear Network is to empower rural communities that would be affected by uranium and phosphate mining in Ceará. It is composed of the rural communities directly affected by these undertakings.

Results
The project comprised two main areas of activity: communication and socio-judicial research and accompaniment. In the legal area, accompaniment of environmental licensing was carried out, as well as coordination with the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Public Defender’s Office. In the communication area, a report was produced in the form of comic strips about the the site’s impact on the territory and experiences of coexisting with the semiarid region; material about the project was prepared for dissemination and mobilization; Facebook was used to spread content published on the site and provide information in a smooth fashion; and videos were produced.
