Contexto
In Brazil, domestic work goes back to the slave-owning colonial period that lasted almost four centuries and penalized Black and poor women. More than seven million people are domestic workers – 93% of these people are women, and 62% of these are Black women. Only 30% have a formal contract. In Paraíba, there are 117 thousand domestic workers, of which more than 90% are women. Inequalities are translated in the lack of appreciation and recognition and in situations of moral harassment, racism and physical and psychological violence.
Sobre a Organização
The group began its work before it was actually founded, in the 1980s, with the participation in state, regional and national meetings, congresses and seminars promoted by the domestic worker’s movement. In 2005, the João Pessoa Coordination of Policies for Women conducted a training process with 50 domestic workers, which drove the founding of the union. Nowadays, it provides legal services and the participation in social movements.
