Strategic litigation in human rights: guaranteeing rights in the prison system and gender

Guaranteeing the human rights of adolescents and women incarcerated in the prison system. The collective aims to denounce and forward to the Justice system cases of maltreatment and torture that occur at the Fundação Casa, a prison unit in São Paulo, in order to hold the State responsible for the application of United Nations rules, such as the prohibition against male workers in female prison units. In the case of adult inmates, there will be special attention given to the guaranteeing of dignified conditions for the exercise of maternity and the ability of mothers and their children to be together.
Main activities
– Coordinate and develop action strategies;
– Workshop to present and discuss rights violations in the female prison system;
– Strategic meetings with secretariats of human rights and public safety, the Public Defender’s office, among others, to present proposals for specific public policies for the female prison system.
About the organization
The Human Rights Lawyers Collective – Cadhu looks to act in a matter that is collaborative, horizontal and hierarchy-free. Cases that are undertaken are discussed among the entire group, during which goals and legal strategies are designed. In order to follow through on each suit, a working group is formed with a particular coordinator, who is also responsible for maintaining dialogue and coordination among the rest of the collective.
